The video gaming industry or interactive entertainment industry is an exciting and growing opportunity to move into careers for students entering the workforce.  Learning to create video games can lead students to opportunities in a number of industries, including but not limited to Manufacturing,  Health care, Higher Education, Technology, Government, and so many more.  The skills that are necessary to expand from creating traditional video games to augmented reality and 3D animation as a tool to learn and educate others is continuously growing.

This is a (5) session/ 5 part Saturday program beginning Saturday, October 19th, 2019 with the last day of completion on Saturday November 16th. This program is for students looking to build their skills in digital animation design. The program begins each Saturday at 9:00 AM and ends at 4:00 PM.

From concept design through delivering a game to market, these 5 days will take students on a journey to understand the career opportunities and the roles involved within the rapidly growing and globally competitive gaming industry. This program is more than just learning to create “cool” games. It expands a student’s mind to realize the opportunities that surround the excitement of gaming throughout many industries across STEAM today and beyond.

Leveraging Unity, students will use design thinking to create a video game which follow the guidelines outlining the competencies students are required to demonstrate. Students will work collaboratively to demonstrate real-world development teams. The program will conclude with a Capstone project where teams will present a final 2-3 minute video trailer and presentation of their game design. Teams must meet timelines for the deliverables, work collaboratively, and demonstrate good digital citizenship at all times.

Program cost is $975.00 for 5 Days. Registration is open until October 1st.

Learning Objectives:

Identify basic game design principles

Demonstrate ability to review and summarize contemporary video games.

Implement the fundamental concepts of project management with the context of the video game development process.

Utilize the game editor user interface to open and organize a simple project or scene.

Differentiate primary components within the game editor.

Distinguish contemporary game genres and platforms.

Devise systems to organize and illustrate the interactivity and player immersion that exist within contemporary video games.

Reconstruct the rules of contemporary games, in order to improve the game play experience.

Critique contemporary video games.

Interpret the role of game narrative and game play; evaluating its impact on the interactive storytelling environment.

About our Instructors:

Luis Tolosa

Game Developer

Luis first began learning how to code while studying Computer Science at Columbia University. He followed the Vision and Graphics track which allowed him to take classes such as Computer Graphics, Artificial Intelligence, Robotics, and 3D User Interfaces. Due to this coursework, Luis was able to conduct research projects focusing on Augmented and Virtual Reality. Post-graduation, Luis went to work at Blue Sky Studios to work Virtual Reality tools and experiences. He now works at Labrodex Studios as a Game Developer focusing on Gameplay systems and AI. Throughout his time with We Connect the Dots, Luis shared his knowledge of Computer Science by assisting in teaching Introduction to Coding and Game Development.

Nicholas (Nic) Leask

STEAM Coach

Nic is a STEAM Coach with experience in Technology at LC Consulting, LCC. He is a Microsoft Innovative Educator (MIE) Certified Instructor and Microsoft: Education Educator (MEE) Certified Instructor. He attended the Minecraft: Education Edition training at the Microsoft Corporate Office in Redmond, Washington. He graduated from Stony Brook University where he attained a degree in Environmental Studies and a degree in Business Management. Post-graduation Nic worked for an environmental marketing agency and later worked at a technology recruitment firm. The latter is where Nicholas found his opportunity to move into technology. He attended a software engineering bootcamp in NYC where he gained experience working primarily with CSS, HTML, JavaScript & React. While working with Connect-The-Dots, Nic has helped shape Nebula Academy and taught the importance of bringing tech into the classroom and how to utilize technology as a resource tool to engage students in immersive learning experiences.
